Windows Genuine Advantage Problem

What is Windows Genuine Advantage?

Windows Genuine Advantage is Microsoft's not so subtle crackdown on illegal piracy of Windows XP and Microsoft Office products. Microsoft started with an ActiveX component to force owners of Windows XP to validate their version before downloading security updates. Unfortunately this particular scheme was rather easily foiled by groups on the net andworkarounds appeared almost instantly including cracked files and javascript fixes.

Now Microsoft is becoming more advanced in their attack on pirated versions of Windows XP or Microsoft Office. They are including a Windows Genuine Advantage security patch in the updates of Windows XP. The newest patch, released the first week of June 2006, actually produces popups on the login screen and on the desktop explaining that this version of Windows XP is not genuine and the owner may be the victim of software counterfeiting.

If your version of Windows XP is not genuine and does not pass the validation schemes, you will not be able to download security patches from Windows Update, or install the latest version of Internet Explorer 7 and other software. For those users that do have a valid version of Windows XP, Microsoft offers some special promotions.

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is an anti-piracy system created by Microsoftthat enforces online validation of the licensing of several recent Microsoft Windowsoperating systems when accessing several services, such as Windows Update, and downloading Windows components from the Microsoft Download Center. In Windows 7, WGA is renamed Windows Activation Technology[1]. WGA consists of two components: an installable component called WGA Notifications that hooks into Winlogonand validates the Windows license upon each logon and an ActiveX control that checks the validity of the Windows license when downloading certain updates from the Microsoft Download Center or Windows Update. WGA Notifications covers Windows XP, Windows Vista and current versions of Windows 7. It does not cover other versions of the Windows NT family, such as Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, or the Windows 9x family. The ActiveX control however checks Windows 2000 Professional licenses as well.[2]

WGA also advertises the latest service pack for Windows XP, which requires manual intervention to disable. Previously voluntary, it became mandatory for use of these services in July 2005.

Despite its name it does not actually evaluate the integrity or security of any computer.

Howto repair your windows boot issues through recovery console, the expert way.

If you are using Windows XP, you might be aware of the option “Repair Windows XP Using Recovery Console” at the setup of your Windows XP installation.

This is one of the most undertilised options that is being used by users when there is a crash in the Windows XP operating system.

I recently encountered this issue with my clients laptop as his laptop keeps on restarting.

When that happen, the only idea i will get is the boot up file (Boot.ini) is corrupted.

Normally the easiest way out is to use the “Automatic Repair” function, but in this case that option is unavailable on my client’s laptop.

Another way out is to “F” (which means format) the hard drive of the laptop but think about the valuable data you are going to erase :( .

Hence, I’m giving my shot using the “old-school” command prompt style which is the Recovery Console”.

Press R on your keyboard to enter the Recovery Console.

Basically on the Recovery Console is only command prompt, nothing else.

To begin Windows will provide you the necessary information for you to begin your repair.

Here are he steps for you to take note when performing this process:-

1) After the first question, type 1 and press enter.

Type the administrator password (if available) and hit enter.

2) Type CD .. (note there must be a space between CD and .. )

This will bring you to the main “C” directory.

3) Type the following attributes.

  • C:\>ATTRIB -H C:\\BOOT.INI
  • C:\>ATTRIB -R C:\\BOOT.INI
  • C:\>ATTRIB -S C:\\BOOT.INI

4) Type DEL BOOT.INI

5) After that type BOOTCFG /Rebuild

This process may take some time to complete,

Once that is done, just type CHKDSK /R /F .

This procees again will take some time as it will check the disk status. Do note it can take up to 30 minutes or more on slower machines.

Once the check disk process is complete, complete the whole process by typing FIXBOOT and click enter.

You will be given a prompt that reads Sure you want to write a new bootsector to the partition C: ?”

Simply type Y for yes. Once done, type exit to restart your PC. You will now be able to boot normally on your Windows XP.

Make your windows7 looki like mac

So you’re perfectly happy with the way Windows 7 functions, but you’re finding the trademark Apple soft, gray sexiness from OS X 10.7 Lion irresistible? Fear not, oh yeah of multi-OS affinities! A new transformation pack makes skinning Windows 7 to like OS X Lion an absolute breeze. You’ll find it over at DeviantArt from user hameddanger. Before you get started, make sure to create a System Restore point just in case anything should go wrong during the installation process. The theme pack will patch certain system files, so there’s always a chance something could go awry — but it worked just fine on both my Windows 7 systems, on running 32-bit and one 64-bit.
This particular theme is neatly packaged as a no-fuss installer. Just download, double-click, and keep clicking next until you reach the end of the process. After a reboot several new apps will appear in your system tray, each one imparting a bit of the Lion look and feel — including Leftsider to move the maximize/minimize/restore buttons, UberIcon to add the bounce effect to your desktop icons, RocketDock, and Y’s Shadow.
The finished look is very nice, though it’s not without glitches. The top portion of a Firefox 4+ window, for example, looks a bit odd with no borders. Another irk is that drop shadows behind application windows are blurred by Windows 7′s Aero Glass functionality. Disabling transparency in your personalization won’t really help — you’ll be left with non-transparent shadows which look even less attractive. I’d also like to see an Expose impersonator added to the pack, like dexpose2 (though it’s certainly easy enough to download and install separately) to complete the look.
